PIFA presents the Josh Lawrence Quintet feat. pianist Orrin Evans

April 4th, 2011

Trumpeter-bandleader Josh Lawrence leads a quintet featuring acclaimed pianist Orrin Evans through a program celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month. The concert is part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts and will be staged at the Kimmel Center Plaza April 11, 5-7 PM.

Lawrence is a University of the Arts graduate who has recently returned to Philadelphia after building his career in New York and Europe. His newest album Roots has been garnering rave reviews and his tours are establishing him as a bright new star on the international stage. A current engagement with Evans’ band introduced Lawrence to the pianist and his music.

Hot House Magazine has described Orrin Evans as “the clear-cut best pianist of his time”. He is at the forefront of the Philadelphia and New York jazz scenes and has worked to bring them closer as illustrated on his new album Captain Black Big Band.

The two will be joined by saxophonist Mike Cemprola, bassist Micah Jones and drummer Michael De Castro for an evening of blues, bebop and soulful jazz.

Here’s the video of Irish Dance (Riverdance) combined with NYC vibe.

To the cross-culture!

Last Night

So me and my handsome husband Josh Lawrence, we went to Sassafras Bar last night. Small, chilled, Irish style pub with a very decent stock of whiskey, bourbon, rye, beer and…a Polish potato vodka! I was content!

They have a jazz nights at Sassafras and yesterday we enjoyed a jazz duo performed by guitarist Mike Lorenc and bassist Nick Krolak. Josh joined them for a tune while I poured down a pint of double white. The music went so well with my wheat beer. And again - I was content.

We left the Sassafras and headed West to catch the show at Play and Players Theater. A 100 years old brownstone, hidden in one of the charming streets of Philadelphia, soulful and inviting. We saw/listened to Norman David and his big band THE ELEVENTET with Dennis Wasko on trumpet! and Mike Cemprola on alto saxophone!

I had a pleasure to meet:

Chris Farr (tenor sax), Mark Allen (baritone sax), Jon Barnes (trumpet), Randy Kapralick (trombone), Jarred Antonacci (trombone), Tom Lawton (piano), Steve Beskrone (bass) and Erik Johnson (drums).

All compositions (and jokes) were brought by Norman David who performed a great soprano saxophone and poetry reading.

The show will be back again on April 28th. I’ll be there. Will you?

O.
